Taking stock: January 2018

January always catches me by surprise after the blur of  end of school, Olive's birthday, Xmas (we hosted) and visiting family.

This month I'm.....

Loving: Donut peaches.

Sewing: Ponte-waisted A-line skirts with perfect contrast pockets!!!! Pattern by Woven by Society.

Crocheting: Nothing.

Cooking: Lots of veggies from the veggie patch including eggplants, zucchini, snowpeas, sweetcorn and cucumbers.

Baking: Not a lot of sourdough bread this month.

Eating: All you can eat Japanese with girlfriends.

Drinking: Soda stream water from my awesome Xmas present.
Reading: Lily Brett - Only in New York
Next read: Anne Tyler's Vinegar Girl, a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew.

Wanting: To order some woven labels to sew into my me-made clothes from here. I want them to say Di Made.

Looking: Forward to starting my new uni course in March.
Playing: The Game of Life. Olive got a whole heap of games for Xmas and her birthday and this one seems to be the only one we've played so far.
Deciding: What to cook for dinner  Every. Single. Day. Why do I find it so hard to meal plan?
Wishing: That my friend will see the light at the end of the very dark tunnel she currently finds herself in.
Enjoying: Writing my first blog post for the year.
Waiting: Spent New Years Day/night in Emergency with my partner. Not the funnest way to start the year.

Liking: My new laptop. A lot.

Seeing: A Midsummer Night's Dream (Australian Shakespeare Company), The Greatest Showman (cinema) and Wonder (Cinema). So unusual for me to have so many arty outings in one month, let alone during the school holidays!!!!! All were brilliant.

Loving: Frozen slices of citrus fruit to pop into our glasses of soda water.

Buying: A new workout t-shirt for my Pilates class next week.
Watching: The Affair on Stan. Realised a week later that the character Cole is Pacey from Dawson's Creek. Still really hot!

Wanting: A Bakers Blade Bread Lame to make slashing loaves easier.
Hoping: it doesn't get too hot for the rest of Jan and Feb.

Cringing: at Hamish MacDonald's terrible interview with Nigella Lawson on The Project.

Needing: More sleep.
Smelling: Roses and basil from the garden.

Wearing: Denim cut-off shorts that I made from an old pair of jeans.
Following: Closet Case Patterns and her mantra of Just Make it Already!

Noticing: My knees have been getting sore a lot. Hoping my new Pilates course will help.
Sorting: through photos as I tidy up my sewing room to create a study space; well started anyway.
Getting: Olive ready for the new school year.
Bookmarking: Weber Q BBQ recipes.

Coveting: Liberty of London fabric.

Feeling: grateful for my lot in life. It's not glamourous or Pinterest worthy, but I have a roof over my head, food on the table and the love of a wonderful, hard working partner and amazing daughter.

Snacking: cucumber spears and tzatziki dip.

Hearing: My daughter singing songs from her latest Broadway show: The Little Mermaid

My blog is making me fat

Temptation lurks everywhere. It’s official. My blog is making me fat. It’s also keeping my house messy since I started prioritising writing and baking over vacuuming and putting away laundry. In fact it’s happening right now – I’ve slept in because I stayed up to watch the new Kennedy’s drama on ABC and then wanted to ‘quickly’ check in to see if there were any new messages or comments. Before I know it its really late and that coffee I had after lunch has kicked in, giving me caffeine-induced heart palpitations, delaying sleep even further. Mr Di-licious (bless him) allowed me to sleep in and delivered a latte to my bedside. There’s a bowl of porridge waiting for me on the kitchen bench, ready to be reheated while I turn on my laptop and think about my next post. I used to get up early and go to the gym before breakfast but lately I’ve just been too tired. You know you’ve been MIA when you get notified about a trainer leaving and you’ve absolutely no idea who they’re talk

Cute owl cupcake toppers

Hoot Hoot!! How cute are these adorable owl cupcake toppers? I whipped these up last week for a special surprise birthday delivery for my niece. I've been making cupcakes for Hannah's birthdays for the last three years.  Its always interesting to look back at photos of earlier decorating efforts - I've come a long way.  Last year was sort of the p ièce de résistance   - the famed Golden Snitch cupcakes for her Harry Potter themed party. This year we were getting ready for our epic drive to Byron Bay for my sister's wedding , so we didn't make it to Bendigo.  So no Di-licious cupcakes for Hannah.  At least, that's what she thought! Last week I arranged to come and stay the night with Olive and I brought along half a dozen cute owl cupcakes - SURPRISE! We both agree that the embossed ones make the greatest impact but the plain pink ones are cute too. I re-purposed a scrapbooking card embosser to create the embossing effect (cheaper than the cak

The Earl of Chocolate Cake

Making one cake for the man you love is hard. Try making three to celebrate his 40th birthday! Unlike a normal cake order where the client specifies the flavour, shape, filling and decoration, Mr Di-licious simply said “Surprise me”. Humph....I think that’s worse. One cake down and the next needed in only a few days, inspiration finally struck one morning in the shower – make him an Earl Grey tea flavoured cake. Brilliant! My first scan of the web found lots of tea cakes but they were more church picnic than milestone birthday. It’s a celebration cake and in my world that means a creamy filling and chocolate. Chocolate and Earl Grey?  Suspend belief and take it from me: it works mate... it does! Time was short so instead of experimenting, I let my eyes do the walking through Google Images to find a recipe I could use. I was instantly smitten by a cake by Cultivate Online : The Queen’s Earl Grey Fudge Cake - a chocolate and earl grey tea cake, filled with earl grey flavou
